Oversteps News 61  October 2020

A new Oversteps book has just been published, to cheer us all up as winter approaches.

What Love Requires by Dana Littlepage Smith (ISBN  978-1-906856-88-5), price £8 plus p &p.

Dana is an American poet who has lived in Devon for 20 years. The fact that she is also a Quaker is reflected in her poetry, which shines with her love of humanity and nature. You can read an example of her work, as well as sample poems by all the other Oversteps poets, on our website: http://www.overstepsbooks.com

It will come as no surprise to our readers that it has not been possible to perform in public in recent months. Personally I have found that there are numerous opportunities for virtual readings by Zoom, so I’m sure that, like me, most Oversteps poets have done plenty of remote readings. We very much look forward to being able to meet our audiences in the real world again, but for the present have to be content with what technology has so kindly made possible.

The lack of ‘live’ readings has, sadly but inevitably, impacted on our sales, so like so many other businesses we are being challenged financially. We are, however, confident that we will survive these dark days and bring you many more wonderful poetry collections in future. I shall be starting work on the next three Oversteps books very soon, so that they can be available in the early months of 2021.

Even in lockdown, Oversteps poets have not been idle, so here are a few items of other recent news:

Glen Phillips won the Ros Spencer national poetry prize at the Perth Poetry Festival in Australia, for his poem, ‘Howl Again’.

Tony Watts was highly commended in the 2020 Vernal Equinox Competition run by the Federation of Writers Scotland.
Tony was also awarded joint First Prize in the Exmoor Society Poetry Competition, and had a poem included in an online anthology called ‘World’s Best Poems’.

It was good to see that Helen Overell was chosen for inclusion in the Poetry Society’s Poetry News for her poem on the theme of Winning.

Mark Totterdell was Commended in the Sentinel Literary Quarterly Poetry Competition (July 2020), and was also shortlisted in the Wigtown Poetry Prize.

One of Jan Harris‘s poems, In Search of John Clare’s Nightingales, was shortlisted for the Wales Poetry Award.

Sue Davies was Commended in the Second Light competition. Her poem Flight from the Enchanter is to be published and illustrated by Words for the Wild to celebrate the work of Gilbert White.

Jenny Hockey‘s Oversteps book, ‘Going to bed with the moon’ was featured on the poet John Foggin’s ‘The Great Fogginzo’s Cobweb’.

Alwyn Marriage was Shortlisted in the Second Light Poetry Competition.

In the July Sentinel Literary Quarterly poetry competition, Doreen Hinchliffe received a special mention, A C Clarke and Mark Totterdell were Commended, A C Clarke was also Highly Commended and won Second Prize, and Michael Thomas won Third Prize. Not a bad harvest for Oversteps poets: no wonder I’m so proud of them all.

I hope you are managing to enjoy the autumn colours and have a good supply of poetry books to help you through the coming winter. And if you need a novel for the long evenings, you might still like a copy of my latest novel, The Elder Race for £10 plus £2 p&p.

wishing you health and happiness
