A new Oversteps book has just been published.
After Hopper & Lange by David Olsen (ISBN  978-1-906856-90-8), price £8 plus p &p

The latest Oversteps publication is by David Olsen, who has been an energy economist, management consultant and performing arts critic and now works as a poet and playwright. In this book, David responds to many of the paintings by the artist, Edward Hopper and his contemporaries, and to photographs by Dorothea Lange.

You can read an example of his work, as well as sample poems by all the other Oversteps poets, on our website: http://www.overstepsbooks.com

Sadly, we are still not able to have launches and readings with real live people present, but there are plenty of Zoom events available on the web to keep people well-fed with poetry.

However, one spark of good news is that the Ways with Words Festival will most probably happen in some form this July, so we have agreed that we shall aim to hold our ever-popular Oversteps Day on Saturday 17th July. If it is safe to meet in person, the various Dartington venues will be arranged to allow strict social distancing, which means that audiences may have to be limited. If it is still not safe to get together, we will adapt and run readings on-line.

As usual, Oversteps poets feature in an encouraging number of competition successes. Here are a few recent ones:

Sue Proffitt was shortlisted in the Hedgehog Competition and shortlisted with honours in the Cinnamon Competition
Tony Watts and Alwyn Marriage were both commended in the Poetry kit competition on the theme of Home
Simon Williams, Sue Proffitt and Mark Totterdell are all in the long list for the Roger McGough annual poetry prize
Fokkina McDonnell had a poem shortlisted in the 2020 Café Writers competition
A short story by Ian Royce Chamberlain was highly commended in the Poetry on the Lake short story competition; and one story by Christopher North and two by Alwyn Marriage were shortlisted
Jennie Osborne recently appeared on The West Wilts radio show, The Poetry Place. The programme can still be heard at https://westwiltsradio.com/
Various Oversteps poets are still appearing regularly at the Uncut events in Exeter
There will be a treat of readings by Oversteps poets at Poetry Teignmouth, on Tuesday 27th April. Poets appearing will be Jennie Osborne, Ian Royce Chamberlain and Alwyn Marriage from England, plus (flying in specially by Zoom) Glen Phillips from Australia and Rebecca Bilkau from Germany.

wishing you health and happiness

  1. Many thanks for this Alwyn and good to see Oversteps and Oversteps poets flourishing despite it all and even the possibility of Dartington this summer. Congratulations on your commendation in the Poetry Kit competition too.

All good wishes to you and Hugh
