Oversteps News 60 July 2020

Another new book from Oversteps, to ensure you’ve all got enough to read this summer.

Mute Swans on the Cam by Jan Harris (ISBN 978-1-906856-87-8), price £8 plus p&p.

The latest Oversteps book is a first collection by a poet with a keen eye for nature in all its forms, which she both celebrates and encourages us to value and protect. For Jan Harris, nothing is too mundane or ordinary – or rather, even the most ordinary creature or plant is recognised as special.

Jan recently took 3rd place in the Wales Poetry Award; and she was subsequently interviewed for their blog:  https://poetrywales.co.uk/jan-harris-on-the-poems-that-inspire-her/ .

Other recent news

A C Clarke was highly commended in the Sangschaw Scots language competition
highly commended in the Autumn Voices over 70s poetry competition and was
shortlisted for the inaugural Janet Coats award.
She was delighted that a bonus of being shortlisted for the Janet Coats award was that her poem was commented on and read on stage by Jackie Kay.

Sue Davies was awarded third prize in the Southdowns Poetry Festival/Binstead Prize Poetry Competition.

Michael Thomas was Highly Commended in the York Poetry Prize, 2020. As the award ceremony had to be cancelled because of C19, the organisers have put together a video showing the winning poets reading their poems.

Fokkina McDonnell was one of five poets to receive a 2020 Northern Writers Award from New Writing North.

Readings – ah yes, Readings! So many have been cancelled.

It’s July, the month in which I am normally rushing around organising and running the wonderful Oversteps Day at Ways with Words in Devon. The necessary cancellation of this annual event will hit Oversteps hard financially, as it’s one of the main opportunities for selling our lovely books; but that is not the only sadness. Oversteps Day is the one occasion of the year when a good number of our poets are able to meet and get to know each other better and to enjoy the privilege of reading to keen, appreciative audiences in the glorious setting of Dartington Hall. While the cancellation is disappointing to all of us, I also feel for the staff of Ways with Words, who work so hard to create these amazing literary events, and who will not see the fruit of their labours this summer.

On a more personal note, another event at Ways with Words was going to be the launch of my novel, The Elder Race.
I mentioned this in the last Oversteps News, and am really grateful to those of you who got in touch to order a copy of the book, and in many cases to write appreciative messages to me when you had read it. It seems that the book is being widely recommended by word of mouth and, again, many thanks to those who have shared the news with others. I still have copies available, if anyone else is running out of lockdown reading matter and would like to purchase one. If you contact me, with your snailmail address, at alwynmarriage@marriages.me.uk, I’ll post a copy and send information on how to pay. If you’re ordering an Oversteps book and would find it easier to add the £12 to your order, that’s fine. I’ll sort it out when the money arrives.

Oversteps News 57 September 2019

We are delighted to publish a third collection by Elisabeth Rowe. Her previous Oversteps books were Thin Ice and Taking Shape.

Timewise by Elisabeth Rowe (ISBN  978-1-906856-84-7), price £8 plus p &p.

Elisabeth’s poems are often humorous, invariably sensitive, and always intelligent. Some of the poems in this collection reflect on the passage of time and the facts of ageing and mortality. Having experienced, and fortunately overcome, the danger imposed by cancer, Elisabeth does not take life for granted. Dartmoor, where Elisabeth has the good fortune to live, figures strongly, but so, also, does British Columbia and the Haida Gwaii, and the colonial India of an earlier age.
