Oversteps News 54  November 2018

We are pleased to be publishing another collection by a poet who is new to Oversteps.

Life Class by Carol DeVaughn (ISBN 978-1-906856-81-6), price £8 plus p&p

Carol DeVaughn, an American-born prize-winning poet, has lived in London for many years, teaching English language and literature, practising T’ai Chi, working as a life-class model and performing her poetry at charity events. Life Class is her first collection

Carol has a keen eye for art, which she celebrates with poems about Michelangelo, van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rothco and others; and she has also experienced what it is like to be the focus of an artist’s eye, through sitting as a life-class model for several years.

Oversteps News 41  April 2016

Some of you may remember that I took two months off this winter. I have now made up for this absence by producing four books in two months! I won’t be starting any new ones for a little while, so I hope you’ll enjoy these latest two in the meantime.

Sally

Doors Opening by Sally Festing (ISBN 978-1-906856-63-2), price £8 plus p&p

Messages of Change[1]Monica Alvi has described Sally Festing’s poetry as bold and enquiring, taut and emotionally open. This is a good description of a book that opens doors for us, encouraging us to look anew at nature, human relationships and art. Sally lives in North Norfolk, and her work often has a whiff of that windy coast. She runs Salthouse Poetry in the Burnhams.

The Mazemaker’s Daughters by Angela Stoner (ISBN 978-1-906856-60-1), price £8 plus p&p

SAMSUNG CSC

Mazemaker front cover
Angela’s first collection, Weight and Flight was published by Oversteps in 2010. This new collection is very different from that, and indeed from any of our other publications.

Taking the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinth as a starting point, Angela embellishes the story by imagining that, as well as his son Icarus, Daedalus had two daughters. I won’t spoil the story by divulging too much, but there is plenty of excitement and drama, blood and gore in this new take on an ancient myth. Angela lives in the far west of Cornwall and the landscape there is a major influence on much of her work. She is active in the vibrant Cornish poetry scene.

Oversteps News 39    October 2015

Lighting the fire by John Daniel  (ISBN 978-1-906856-59-5)

Front cover

John's pic for coverjpg

John Daniel’s first Oversteps collection, Skinning the Bull, was published in 2012. We are now pleased to present his new book, Lighting the fire.

John is both a poet and an artist, and in designing these two collections, I have used paintings by him for the front covers. He has a strong, clear poetic voice, his subjects range from chess to shrimps to Chinese kidneys, and his interest in the finer details of the English language can be observed in poems such as Dr Johnson’s Dictionary and Punctuation.

John lives in Totnes and Oxford and is married to Oversteps poet Jane Spiro, whose collection, Playing for Time, we published this last summer.

As in other years, Oversteps poets were very well represented at the Poetry on the Lake festival on Lake Orta in Italy this October, with readings by, among others, Elisabeth Rowe, Anne Stewart, Michael Swan, Caroline Carver, Hilary Elfick, Rebecca Bilkau and Alwyn Marriage. We enjoyed readings by Carol Ann Duffy, Gillian Clarke and Imtiaz Dharker, and basked in the warm Italian sunshine, and several of us also enjoyed swimming in the lake. The Sunday morning readings were on the Sacro Monte, which you can see in this picture, courtesy of Poetry on the Lake:

Oversteps News 37    June 2015

Here’s a really beautiful book to take with you on holiday – or enjoy at home if you’re not going away.`

Playing for Time by Jane Spiro (ISBN 978-1-906856-57-1. £8)

         jane-spiro  playing-for-time-full

As well as writing fine poetry, Jane has been involved in a number of poetry projects, including exhibitions of poetry and photographs, poetry on the Oxford buses and the first poetry as a foreign language competition. Her writing is lyrical and intelligent, travels from Devon to Hawaii and back, is not afraid to tackle dark subjects as well as bright ones, and revels in the sounds of language. Jane is currently Reader in Language Education at Oxford Brookes University.

While on the subject of summer holidays, I wonder if any of you would like a copy of ‘Blue Water Café’ by Sue Davies (rrp £8)? Between now and the end of July it will be availablefront cover
at £6 if bought by itself, or £2 if added to an order for ‘Playing for Time’. Stocks may run out before then, so don’t delay.

One of the other great delights of summer is, of course, the Oversteps Day at Ways with Words at Dartington Hall in Devon. This year it will be held on Saturday 11th July, and there will, as usual, be a whole day of rich and varied readings in the Duke’s Room. It would be lovely to welcome some of you to this special day, so here’s the programme, in case you can make it to some or all of the events.

The morning readings will be by poets whom we have published this year.

 10.00am   Starting out and Returning
11.30am     New to Oversteps

In the afternoon we will be ‘Here, There and Everywhere’
2.30pm     Birds, Beasts and Botany
4.00pm    The Great Escape

Poets reading during the day will be: Ann Segrave, Mark Totterdell, Robert Cole, Denise Bennett, Helen Overell, James Turner, Rose Flint, Michael Thomas, Jennie Osborne, Christopher North and Alwyn Marriage.

Single tickets ar £6 each, or you can buy a whole day ticket for £20 (www.wayswithwords.co.uk).

We tend to relax in party mood after the final session; and in the odd free moments during the day it is possible to wander through the lovely Dartington gardens.

Unknown

Other recent news includes the fact that a number of Oversteps poets were successful in the Poetry on the Lake competition. Hilary Elfick won second prize; Alwyn Marriage was shortlisted; Michael Swan, Elisabeth Rowe and Alwyn Marriage were long listed; and A C Clarke was highly commended in the formal category.

I hope you all enjoy the summer

A new book to launch us into summer:

Safe Passage by Sue Boyle (ISBN 978-1-906856-56-4. £8)

safe-passage-full     sue-boyle

I first met Sue Boyle when she invited me to read at her festival in Bath, and I began to discover some of the wonderful work she has done for poetry in that city through her Bath Poetry Café with its programme of public performances and Poetry Writing Days. While working on behalf of other poets, she has also been developing her own considerable talent and has, in this book, produced a stunning collection of poetry. Sue has a keen intelligence, great style, a sharp eye, a musical ear and a sense of humour; and her wide experience of the world informs her poetry. With this book to accompany us, we can all be confident of a ‘Safe Passage’.

A new book by Jane Spiro will be appearing within the next few weeks; but in the meantime we’ve decided to offer some of our older for-and-against-naturestock at give-away prices from time to time. The first of these is For and Against Nature by the poet and artist Christopher Cook, published in 2000. While stocks last, this book will be available, with or without Sue’s book, for £1, plus £1.80 p&p.

Further information about Oversteps poets can be found on our website, where you can also order any of our books. http://www.overstepsbooks.com.

will be joined by Mandy Pannett, Robin Houghton and Jeremy Page for an afternoon of poetry at St Anne’s Church, Lewes

And looking just a little further ahead, this year’s Oversteps Day at Ways with Words in Dartington will be on Saturday 11th July. Put it in your diaries now.

More readings will be announced in the next newsletter. For other forthcoming readings, please see the home page of our website, which I attempt, with varying success, to keep up to date.
