It is always a pleasure to introduce to the wider public a poet who has been writing and publishing for some time, but for whom this is the first collection.

Places by Paul Surman (ISBN 978-1-906856-79-3), price £8 plus p&p.

In his poetry, Paul is often ‘the observer unobserved’ as he introduces us to aspects of nature that we might well have otherwise missed. This role is fed by his enjoyment of walking in the Chilterns and his former experience as Reserve Manager of a nature reserve. He helps to organise poetry readings and workshops for Back Room Poets in Oxford.

Oversteps News 50  January 2018

We start 2018 with new collections from two poets who have been published by Oversteps before.

With such a brilliant list of poets whom we’ve published in recent years, it’s not surprising that many of them come back to Oversteps in the hope of having a second, or even a third book published by us. If we accepted them all, there would never be a chance for new poets to be published, and we do believe in welcoming emerging writers if they are good enough. Following our Editorial meetings, it therefore sometimes falls to this unhappy Editor to write to poets who have become friends and whose books have received generous reviews and sold well, to tell them that their new book has not been accepted for publication. From this, you will realise that those who do get through to a subsequent publication must be very good – and that certainly applies to the two new ones this month.

Instructions for a quiet life by Rebecca Bilkau (ISBN 978-1-906856-76-2), price £8 plus p&p

Rebecca was born and bred in England, but now lives, for much of the time, in Germany. Her first Oversteps collection, ‘Weather Notes’, was published in 2012. As well as being a warm and sensitive poet, she is also the Editor of the Beautiful Dragons anthologies, the latest of which, ‘Noble Dissent’, will be launched at the Lancaster Litfest in March.

is a gateway by Jane Spiro (ISBN 978-1-906856-77-9), price £8 plus p&p

Jane’s second Oversteps collection continues some of the themes of her earlier book, ‘Playing for time’ (2015). She is sometimes moved to reflect on the tragic history of Eastern Europe; but her work also includes plenty of hope and transformation, and the beauty of the natural world.

Some of the events coming up in the next few weeks

27th January: Melanie Branton’s one-woman show will be performed as part of the Wolves Literature Festival in Wolverhampton
29th January: Melanie Branton will feature in Raise the Spotlight, in Bristol
2nd February: Sue Proffitt is organising a reading and fundraising event for Dementia Adventure in Exeter
22nd February: Denise McSheehy will be reading at Uncut, in Exeter
17th March: Rebecca Bilkau and Alwyn Marriage will be reading at Litfest in Lancaster
17th March: ‘Noble Dissent’, edited by Rebecca Bilkau, will be launched at Litfest in Lancaster
23rd March: Christine Whittemore will be reading in Cheltenham Community Arts Centre

Looking ahead to summer days, please put Saturday 14th July in your diaries, and come to join us at another wonderful Oversteps Day at Ways with Words, Dartington.

Other news
We were delighted that David Broadbridge‘s poem, Adam’s fall, was set to music by Richard Elfyn Jones, and performed at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, on Christmas Eve.
One of the poems from Denise McSheehy‘s recent Oversteps collection was shortlisted in the Second Light Poetry Competition 2017.

Happy 2018 to you all

Oversteps News 46  March 2017

Another two Oversteps books have been published this month

Open after dark by Sue Proffitt (ISBN 978-1-906856-70-0), price £8 plus p&p.

This is Sue Proffitt’s first collection. Sue, who now lives in a coastguard cottage in South Devon, has previously worked as an actor, a teacher and a psychotherapist. Through her poetry she now explores the beauty and mystery of the more-than-human world, and our relationship with it.

The day  on which I delivered Sue’s copies of her book to her also happened, by coincidence, to be the day she won first prize in the Teignmouth Poetry competition.

Sudden Arabesque by Christine Whittemore
(ISBN 978-1-906856-71-7), price £8 plus p&p.

This is another first collection.
Christine Whittemore has lived in Italy, France and, for many years, the USA, and she has been published and won awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Christine is evidently fascinated by different poetic forms, and she uses a number of them to wonderful effect in this collection.

A few of the readings by Oversteps poets coming up in the next couple of months

5th April: Michael Thomas will be reading at Poetry Refreshed, Smokey Joe’s Café, Cheltenham.
21 April: Susan Taylor is organising a Poetry Slam at Café Culture in Totnes
5th May: Sue Proffitt will be reading at Café Culture, Totnes, in the evening
11th May: Richard Skinner will be giving a reading with Chris Southgate at St Stephen’s, Exeter, 7.30pm
15th May: Christine Whittemore will be reading at Cheltenham Poetry Festival at 7.00pm
17th May: Jane Spiro will be reading at The Poetry Centre, Oxford Brookes University at 1.00pm
18th May: Alwyn Marriage will be reading at the St Ives Festival at 7.30pm,
and from her novel, ‘Rapeseed’ at 5.00pm
19th May: Alwyn Marriage reading at the launch of a Stanley Spencer anthology in Cookham.

The books by Sue Proffitt and Christine Whittemore, as well as many other Oversteps books, can be purchased through the Oversteps website.

Because of the huge number of submissions we receive, both from new poets and from poets we have published before, we are not able to accept any new submissions at present. When I have caught up with some of the fantastic poets who are waiting for their work to be published, I’ll make it known that we are open for submissions again. I hope this does not disappoint too many poets.

best wishes

Oversteps News 45  February 2017

The next new collection from Oversteps is

Something in Writing by David Broadbridge (ISBN 978-1-906856-69-4), price £8 plus p&p.

David Broaddavid-broadbridgesomething-in-writing-fullbridge’s last book was a translation of Danish mediaeval ballads, which was long listed for the Popescu prize in 2011. We are pleased to be publishing a collection of his thoughtful, finely-crafted poems in English. Given the musicality of the poetry, it is not surprising to learn that a number of his poems have been set to music by Christopher Gower and Richard Elfyn Jones.

Some recent successes

Christopher North won 3rd prize and a highly commended place in the Barnet poetry competition
Alwyn Marriage was commended in the South Bank Poetry competition and shortlisted in the Paragram Poetry Prize
Ross Cogan won 2nd prize in the Sentinel Poetry Prize, and had another highly commended.

Other news and forthcoming readings
Alwyn Marriage’s debut novel will be launched in York on Saturday 11th March, during International Women’s Week
Jennie Osborne is part of the organising team for the Teignmouth Poetry Festival, which runs from 16th to 20th March
Susan Taylor and Simon Williams will be leading a poetry and performance workshop, ‘Taking the Stage’, at the Teignmouth Poetry Festival in The Ice Factory, Teignmouth, on Friday March 17th.
Michael Thomas will be reading at Poetry Refreshed, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Cheltenham on 5th April
Jane Spiro will be reading at The Poetry Centre in Oxford in May

I’ll send information about another two books next month. In the meantime, may poetry spring up everywhere,

In a humorous side-reference to Stephen Hawking’s  ‘A brief history of time’, Richard Skinner offers us a collection of poetry around the theme of time. The first half of the book is wide-ranging in its subject matter, and then the second half is a sequence of fourteen elegant sonnets.

Another life
by Fokkina McDonnell (ISBN 978-1-906856-67-0), price £8 plus p&p

fokkina-mcdonnell

Many of you will have seen Fokkina’s poetry published in magazines and anthologies, but this is her first solo collection. Her poetry is characterised by a clear, unsentimental eye, delicately softened by charm and humour.

Oversteps News 42  July 2016

I suspect that not many publishers have the pleasure of publishing new collections at once by two poets who are married; but that is what Oversteps is doing this month. Both Susan Taylor and Simon Williams have been published by Oversteps before, and we’re pleased to present their latest collections.

Temporal Bones by Susan Taylor (ISBN 978-1-906856-64-9), price £8 plus p&p

Susan's front cover

Bone Song - Susan (crop)

Susan Taylor has a light touch and a deep well of inspiration and stories. As well as poems based on myth, fairy tale and history, this new collection contains the whole of her Inuit-based Skeleton Woman sequence. Formerly a farmer in Lincolnshire, Susan now lives and writes on Dartmoor and is married to Simon Williams.

Inti by Simon Williams (ISBN 978-1-906856-65-6), pice £8 plus p&p.

Inti front coverSimon Williams greenery behind extra bgInti was the Inca name for the Sun, which space scientists have now given to a particle of dust collected by the Stardust probe from the Wild 2 comet. Some of Simon’s poems reflect his interest in science, others are much more down-to-earth, and many of them display his irrepressible humour and quirkiness. He is married to Susan Taylor and lives on Dartmoor.

Oversteps News 37    June 2015

Here’s a really beautiful book to take with you on holiday – or enjoy at home if you’re not going away.`

Playing for Time by Jane Spiro (ISBN 978-1-906856-57-1. £8)

         jane-spiro  playing-for-time-full

As well as writing fine poetry, Jane has been involved in a number of poetry projects, including exhibitions of poetry and photographs, poetry on the Oxford buses and the first poetry as a foreign language competition. Her writing is lyrical and intelligent, travels from Devon to Hawaii and back, is not afraid to tackle dark subjects as well as bright ones, and revels in the sounds of language. Jane is currently Reader in Language Education at Oxford Brookes University.

While on the subject of summer holidays, I wonder if any of you would like a copy of ‘Blue Water Café’ by Sue Davies (rrp £8)? Between now and the end of July it will be availablefront cover
at £6 if bought by itself, or £2 if added to an order for ‘Playing for Time’. Stocks may run out before then, so don’t delay.

One of the other great delights of summer is, of course, the Oversteps Day at Ways with Words at Dartington Hall in Devon. This year it will be held on Saturday 11th July, and there will, as usual, be a whole day of rich and varied readings in the Duke’s Room. It would be lovely to welcome some of you to this special day, so here’s the programme, in case you can make it to some or all of the events.

The morning readings will be by poets whom we have published this year.

 10.00am   Starting out and Returning
11.30am     New to Oversteps

In the afternoon we will be ‘Here, There and Everywhere’
2.30pm     Birds, Beasts and Botany
4.00pm    The Great Escape

Poets reading during the day will be: Ann Segrave, Mark Totterdell, Robert Cole, Denise Bennett, Helen Overell, James Turner, Rose Flint, Michael Thomas, Jennie Osborne, Christopher North and Alwyn Marriage.

Single tickets ar £6 each, or you can buy a whole day ticket for £20 (www.wayswithwords.co.uk).

We tend to relax in party mood after the final session; and in the odd free moments during the day it is possible to wander through the lovely Dartington gardens.

Unknown

Other recent news includes the fact that a number of Oversteps poets were successful in the Poetry on the Lake competition. Hilary Elfick won second prize; Alwyn Marriage was shortlisted; Michael Swan, Elisabeth Rowe and Alwyn Marriage were long listed; and A C Clarke was highly commended in the formal category.

I hope you all enjoy the summer
