We are pleased to be publishing another collection by a poet who is new to Oversteps.

Life Class by Carol DeVaughn (ISBN 978-1-906856-81-6), price £8 plus p&p

Carol DeVaughn, an American-born prize-winning poet, has lived in London for many years, teaching English language and literature, practising T’ai Chi, working as a life-class model and performing her poetry at charity events. Life Class is her first collection

Carol has a keen eye for art, which she celebrates with poems about Michelangelo, van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rothco and others; and she has also experienced what it is like to be the focus of an artist’s eye, through sitting as a life-class model for several years.

It is always a pleasure to introduce to the wider public a poet who has been writing and publishing for some time, but for whom this is the first collection.

Places by Paul Surman (ISBN 978-1-906856-79-3), price £8 plus p&p.

In his poetry, Paul is often ‘the observer unobserved’ as he introduces us to aspects of nature that we might well have otherwise missed. This role is fed by his enjoyment of walking in the Chilterns and his former experience as Reserve Manager of a nature reserve. He helps to organise poetry readings and workshops for Back Room Poets in Oxford.

Oversteps News 49  October 2017

I’m really pleased to introduce the latest two Oversteps poets and their books. They are very different from each other, but both are unusual and exciting .

My Cloth-Eared Heart by Melanie Branton (ISBN 978-1-906856-74-8), price £8 plus p&p

These poems are witty, sometimes cheeky, but also thoughtful and challenging. Melanie is a successful performance poet, who excels at poetry slams, and recently represented Bristol at the Hammer and Tongue National Slam Final.

The Plate Spinner by Denise McSheehy (ISBN 978-1-906856-75-5), price £8 plus p&p

I have always loved Denise McSheehy’s poetry. She is adept at the delicate touch, the understatement that says so much more than volumes of words. Many of the poems are luminous, and they all tend to leave the reader wanting more.

It is so good to welcome Melanie and Denise to Oversteps, and I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities to hear them read in the coming months. In the meantime, do buy their books. They cost £8 each, but can be bought as a pair for £15 plus p&p.

In other news

When Oversteps poet, Maggie Butt, invited some of us to perform in a Poem-a-thon in Enfield, to raise money to settle a Syrian refugee family, we thought we were aiming to raise £4,500 to resettle one family. We sailed past that target, galloped past £9,000 and we have now raised over £14,000 and the money is still coming in, enabling us to contribute something worthwhile to at least three Syrian families. Many thanks to all who helped us achieve this magnificent result. Apart from Maggie and myself, there was a wide range of readers, covering 9 hours of constant poetry. The day started with John Hegley and finished with George Szirtes, and there were many gems in between.

We enjoyed fantastic weather at Poetry on the Lake in Italy last weekend, with a number of Oversteps poets attending and sharing their poetry. Oz Hardwick and myself took the stage on Sunday afternoon,  when he talked about The Medieval Fox, and I read from my collection of poems about mediaeval women, In the Image.

Tony Watts has been busy and successful recently. He had a poem commended in the Poetry Space competition 2017, and another highly commended in the Barn Owl Trust, wildlife poetry competition. He recently won 1st prize in the Wax Poetry and Art Poetry Contest, and 3rd prize in the Waltraud Field Open poetry competition. He was a runner-up in the Wundor Poetry contest 2017, and shortlisted for the Magic Oxygen Literary prize.
Fokkina McDonnell won 2nd prize in the Waltraud Field open poetry competition and was highly commended in the short poem category of the Poetry on the Lake competition.
Christopher North was commended in the Winchester Poetry Prize

Oversteps News 48  September 2017

Vertigo & Beeswax by Ian Royce Chamberlain (ISBN 978-1-906856-73-1), price £8 plus p&p.

Here’s a lovely new book to welcome you all back from your summer holidays.

Ian is well-known in Devon, where he performs frequently. He is a member of Moor Poets and a co-founder of the Teignmouth Poetry Festival which, although a relative newcomer to the festival scene, is drawing great poets and audiences to the little town of Teignmouth each spring. Ian’s poems are exact and carefully honed. Subjects covered in his book range from directions for catching a crow, to the extraction of a child’s milk tooth; and his love of the Devon countryside shines through many of the poems.

In other news, we had another wonderful Oversteps Day at Ways with Words in Dartington in July. It’s gratifying when, each year, we receive enthusiastic responses claiming that this year’s was the ‘best yet’. All the recently published Oversteps poets read during the day, and we had a fascinating and educational session on poetic forms.

Christine Whittemore was recently interviewed on Corinium Radio, for their programme ‘Writer’s Room’
Fokkina McDonnell was highly commended in this year’s Poetry on the Lake competition, and
Ross Cogan won 2nd prize in the Stanley Spencer competition

Maggie Butt is organising a Poem-a-thon on Sunday 1st October in Enfield. An amazing line-up of poets will read for 8 minutes each throughout the day, and the money raised from sponsorship of their readings will go to funding the re-settlement of Syrian refugees. Maggie and I are among the readers, so if you’d like to contribute to this really good cause, you can do so through JustGiving, https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/enfield–poem-a-thon, and put Maggie’s or Alwyn’s name in the message box.

Coming up in the next few weeks
18-23 September  Susan Taylor and Simon Williams will be leading a poetry  workshop entitled ‘The Joy of Making’, at the Garsdale Retreat Centre in Sedburgh.
23/24 September  Sally Festing  is reading at Salthouse Church in Norfolk.
25 September  The fifth edition of Simon Williams and Susan Taylor’s poetry newspaper, The Broadsheet, will be launched at the Exeter Poetry Festival. Oversteps poets included in this years Broadsheet are Sue Boyle, Caroline Carver, Rose Cook, Rebecca Gethin, Mary Maher, Alwyn Marriage, Jennie Osborne, Sue Proffitt and Mark Totterdell.
26 September  at 7.30pm, Ian Royce Chamberlain is launching ‘Vertigo & Beeswax’ at the Oystercatchers’ Café in Teignmouth.
30 September at 2.00pm in the Exeter Community Centre Sue Boyle is leading a workshop entitled ‘In praise of brevity’ at the Exeter Poetry Festival .
6-8 October  Alwyn Marriage will be reading from her most recent pamphlet, ‘In the Image’, at the Poetry on the Lake Festival in Italy.

Two more Oversteps books are nearing publication, so I’ll be in touch again in about a month’s time.

Because of the huge number of submissions we receive, both from new poets and from poets we have published before, we are not able to accept any new submissions at present. When I’ve caught up with some of the fantastic poets who are waiting for their work to be published, I’ll make it known that we are open for submissions again. I hope this does not disappoint too many poets. In the meantime, new books will continue to be published every couple of months or so.

best wishes

Oversteps News 42  July 2016

I suspect that not many publishers have the pleasure of publishing new collections at once by two poets who are married; but that is what Oversteps is doing this month. Both Susan Taylor and Simon Williams have been published by Oversteps before, and we’re pleased to present their latest collections.

Temporal Bones by Susan Taylor (ISBN 978-1-906856-64-9), price £8 plus p&p

Susan's front cover

Bone Song - Susan (crop)

Susan Taylor has a light touch and a deep well of inspiration and stories. As well as poems based on myth, fairy tale and history, this new collection contains the whole of her Inuit-based Skeleton Woman sequence. Formerly a farmer in Lincolnshire, Susan now lives and writes on Dartmoor and is married to Simon Williams.

Inti by Simon Williams (ISBN 978-1-906856-65-6), pice £8 plus p&p.

Inti front coverSimon Williams greenery behind extra bgInti was the Inca name for the Sun, which space scientists have now given to a particle of dust collected by the Stardust probe from the Wild 2 comet. Some of Simon’s poems reflect his interest in science, others are much more down-to-earth, and many of them display his irrepressible humour and quirkiness. He is married to Susan Taylor and lives on Dartmoor.

Oversteps News 41  April 2016

Some of you may remember that I took two months off this winter. I have now made up for this absence by producing four books in two months! I won’t be starting any new ones for a little while, so I hope you’ll enjoy these latest two in the meantime.

Sally

Doors Opening by Sally Festing (ISBN 978-1-906856-63-2), price £8 plus p&p

Messages of Change[1]Monica Alvi has described Sally Festing’s poetry as bold and enquiring, taut and emotionally open. This is a good description of a book that opens doors for us, encouraging us to look anew at nature, human relationships and art. Sally lives in North Norfolk, and her work often has a whiff of that windy coast. She runs Salthouse Poetry in the Burnhams.

The Mazemaker’s Daughters by Angela Stoner (ISBN 978-1-906856-60-1), price £8 plus p&p

SAMSUNG CSC

Mazemaker front cover
Angela’s first collection, Weight and Flight was published by Oversteps in 2010. This new collection is very different from that, and indeed from any of our other publications.

Taking the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinth as a starting point, Angela embellishes the story by imagining that, as well as his son Icarus, Daedalus had two daughters. I won’t spoil the story by divulging too much, but there is plenty of excitement and drama, blood and gore in this new take on an ancient myth. Angela lives in the far west of Cornwall and the landscape there is a major influence on much of her work. She is active in the vibrant Cornish poetry scene.

There has been a flurry of activity at Oversteps, with five new books published since Christmas. Here are the latest two:

Parachute Silk by Denise Bennett (ISBN 978-1-906856-55-7)

xFlo23       Parachute Silk cover     Denise’s last book, Planting the Snow Queen was published by Oversteps in 2011, and sold well. In that book we were introduced to Denise’s elderly mother, Ada, in honest, tender poems. Ada appears again in this new collection, as she reaches the great age of 102, and subsequently dies. The book also contains a number of historical poems, including sequences on the Foundling Hospital in London and on the shipwreck of the Royal George and the Royal Oak. This latter subject forms a presentation that Denise gives to organisations interested in marine and naval history.

A Chance of Love by James Turner (ISBN 978-1-906856-52-6)

james-turner      A Chance of Love cover    This is a collection of James’s sonnets, written over two decades. While remaining true to the sonnet form, James has introduced intriguing variations. There are poems about Pavlov, reflections on an affair, a cheeky address to a competition judge, a shaped sonnet leaning over to the right and many more skilful and honest poems – not all of which are of fourteen lines, but you’ll have to read the book to see how he does that without losing the form.

Further information about these poets, and many others, can be found on our website, where you can also order any of our books.
