Oversteps News 56 April 2019

It’s always a pleasure to introduce a new poet, and this month Oversteps has pleasure in publishing a first collection by Patricia Leighton, from Worcestershire.

Hidden by Patricia Leighton (ISBN  978-1-906856-83-0), price £8 plus p &p.

The collection includes reflections on such subjects as how a blind man describes rain, how dusk creeps in to swallow day, the power of words and the poet’s meeting with a six hundred million year-old woodlouse in the form of a trilobite.

Places by Paul Surman (ISBN 978-1-906856-79-3), price £8 plus p&p.

In his poetry, Paul is often ‘the observer unobserved’ as he introduces us to aspects of nature that we might well have otherwise missed. This role is fed by his enjoyment of walking in the Chilterns and his former experience as Reserve Manager of a nature reserve. He helps to organise poetry readings and workshops for Back Room Poets in Oxford.

This is now coming to an end, and to celebrate the success of the scheme, we are offering copies of Anne’s last poetry collection, Singing Granites (rrp £12), co-authored by the Australian poet Glen Phillips at half-price (£6) with the purchase of any other Oversteps book, while stocks last. richard-skinner
In a humorous side-reference to Stephen Hawking’s  ‘A brief history of time’, Richard Skinner offers us a collection of poetry around the theme of time. The first half of the book is wide-ranging in its subject matter, and then the second half is a sequence of fourteen elegant sonnets.

Another life
by Fokkina McDonnell (ISBN 978-1-906856-67-0), price £8 plus p&p

fokkina-mcdonnell

Many of you will have seen Fokkina’s poetry published in magazines and anthologies, but this is her first solo collection. Her poetry is characterised by a clear, unsentimental eye, delicately softened by charm and humour.

Oversteps News 42  July 2016

I suspect that not many publishers have the pleasure of publishing new collections at once by two poets who are married; but that is what Oversteps is doing this month. Both Susan Taylor and Simon Williams have been published by Oversteps before, and we’re pleased to present their latest collections.

Temporal Bones by Susan Taylor (ISBN 978-1-906856-64-9), price £8 plus p&p

Susan's front cover

Bone Song - Susan (crop)

Susan Taylor has a light touch and a deep well of inspiration and stories. As well as poems based on myth, fairy tale and history, this new collection contains the whole of her Inuit-based Skeleton Woman sequence. Formerly a farmer in Lincolnshire, Susan now lives and writes on Dartmoor and is married to Simon Williams.

Inti by Simon Williams (ISBN 978-1-906856-65-6), pice £8 plus p&p.

Inti front coverSimon Williams greenery behind extra bgInti was the Inca name for the Sun, which space scientists have now given to a particle of dust collected by the Stardust probe from the Wild 2 comet. Some of Simon’s poems reflect his interest in science, others are much more down-to-earth, and many of them display his irrepressible humour and quirkiness. He is married to Susan Taylor and lives on Dartmoor.

Oversteps News 37    June 2015

Here’s a really beautiful book to take with you on holiday – or enjoy at home if you’re not going away.`

Playing for Time by Jane Spiro (ISBN 978-1-906856-57-1. £8)

         jane-spiro  playing-for-time-full

As well as writing fine poetry, Jane has been involved in a number of poetry projects, including exhibitions of poetry and photographs, poetry on the Oxford buses and the first poetry as a foreign language competition. Her writing is lyrical and intelligent, travels from Devon to Hawaii and back, is not afraid to tackle dark subjects as well as bright ones, and revels in the sounds of language. Jane is currently Reader in Language Education at Oxford Brookes University.

While on the subject of summer holidays, I wonder if any of you would like a copy of ‘Blue Water Café’ by Sue Davies (rrp £8)? Between now and the end of July it will be availablefront cover
at £6 if bought by itself, or £2 if added to an order for ‘Playing for Time’. Stocks may run out before then, so don’t delay.

One of the other great delights of summer is, of course, the Oversteps Day at Ways with Words at Dartington Hall in Devon. This year it will be held on Saturday 11th July, and there will, as usual, be a whole day of rich and varied readings in the Duke’s Room. It would be lovely to welcome some of you to this special day, so here’s the programme, in case you can make it to some or all of the events.

The morning readings will be by poets whom we have published this year.

 10.00am   Starting out and Returning
11.30am     New to Oversteps

In the afternoon we will be ‘Here, There and Everywhere’
2.30pm     Birds, Beasts and Botany
4.00pm    The Great Escape

Poets reading during the day will be: Ann Segrave, Mark Totterdell, Robert Cole, Denise Bennett, Helen Overell, James Turner, Rose Flint, Michael Thomas, Jennie Osborne, Christopher North and Alwyn Marriage.

Single tickets ar £6 each, or you can buy a whole day ticket for £20 (www.wayswithwords.co.uk).

We tend to relax in party mood after the final session; and in the odd free moments during the day it is possible to wander through the lovely Dartington gardens.

Unknown

Other recent news includes the fact that a number of Oversteps poets were successful in the Poetry on the Lake competition. Hilary Elfick won second prize; Alwyn Marriage was shortlisted; Michael Swan, Elisabeth Rowe and Alwyn Marriage were long listed; and A C Clarke was highly commended in the formal category.

I hope you all enjoy the summer

A new book to launch us into summer:

Safe Passage by Sue Boyle (ISBN 978-1-906856-56-4. £8)

safe-passage-full     sue-boyle

I first met Sue Boyle when she invited me to read at her festival in Bath, and I began to discover some of the wonderful work she has done for poetry in that city through her Bath Poetry Café with its programme of public performances and Poetry Writing Days. While working on behalf of other poets, she has also been developing her own considerable talent and has, in this book, produced a stunning collection of poetry. Sue has a keen intelligence, great style, a sharp eye, a musical ear and a sense of humour; and her wide experience of the world informs her poetry. With this book to accompany us, we can all be confident of a ‘Safe Passage’.

A new book by Jane Spiro will be appearing within the next few weeks; but in the meantime we’ve decided to offer some of our older for-and-against-naturestock at give-away prices from time to time. The first of these is For and Against Nature by the poet and artist Christopher Cook, published in 2000. While stocks last, this book will be available, with or without Sue’s book, for £1, plus £1.80 p&p.

Further information about Oversteps poets can be found on our website, where you can also order any of our books. http://www.overstepsbooks.com.

Oversteps News 31  September 2014

It’s been a wonderful summer in Britain, and I’m still enjoying the Indian summer; but while some of you were basking on the beach, the work at Oversteps went on. Consequently, two new books have been launched in the last few weeks.

Blue Water Café by Sue Davies (ISBN 978-1-906856-48-9)

This is a book to extend the joys of summer on into the darker time of year. It is full of humanity, and displays the full gamut of emotions, covering life from birth to death, with everything in between. There are also tantalising references to famous writers and artists of the past, including  Botticelli, Chagall and Sylvia Plath.

Sue Davies portrait, reduced & cropped

front cover  Just as Blue Water Café came out, last month, we heard that Sue had won third prize in two major poetry competitions: the Wilfred Owen Association Poetry competition,
and the Second Light competition. Sue has recently been on holiday, but will soon be launching into a number of poetry readings.

This Patter of Traces by Mark Totterdell  (ISBN 978-1-906856-49-6)

portrait cropped                                                   Mark, front cover

To call Mark a nature poet might be a little misleading. His poetry does, indeed, shine a bright light on the natural world, presenting us with unforgettable images of plants, insects, reptiles and birds. But  Mark also displays a passionate and erudite fascination with words, and one of his endearing contributions to the world is to post a new weird and wonderful word each day on social media, giving his friends much enjoyment and an enhanced vocabulary.

Mark broke all records for speed of first sales, and there must have been people out in the world ready to pounce as soon as his first book was published. Copies of This Patter of Traces arrived from the printer on Wednesday afternoon, and by the time I had got the box open, five orders had already come in; and the trend has continued since then.

Susan Taylor and Simon Williams, who have each published two collections with Oversteps, will be launching the second issue of their poetry paper, Broadsheet at the Exeter Literature Festival at the end of this month. A number of Oversteps poets are again represented in the paper.

Christopher North gained joint third place in the Torriano Poetry competition, and won the Templar pamphlet competition.

Mandy Pannett won 1st prize in the Barnet Poetry competition, won 2nd prize in the Segora competition, and was runner-up in the Cardiff International Poetry competition.

This year’s Oversteps Day at Ways with Words at Dartington was another great success, with the Duke’s Room bursting at the seams as people crowding in to hear a wide range of readings.

A C Clarke was commissioned to write one of the poems for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She was shortlisted for the Ver Open Poetry competition; and wrote a two-part article on factual truth in poetry for Artemis magazine.

One of the poems I wrote when I was Poet in Residence at the Winchester Arts Festival last year is now on display along with the artwork by Penny Burnfield at Grimsby Minster and at the Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby

Anne Stewart is the winner of this year’s prestigious Silver Wyvern prize at the Poetry on the Lake Festival in Orta, Italy. She will just have time to collect her prize before starting a Hawthornden fellowship.

Further information about all these poets, and many others, can be found on our website, where you can also order any of our books.
