Oversteps News 59  April 2020

Despite the Lock-down, Oversteps is in business, and here’s our latest book

Substantial Ghosts by Doreen Hinchliffe (ISBN  978-1-906856-86-1), price £8 plus p &p.

Doreen Hinchliffe comes from Yorkshire, she taught English for several years before moving to London. Her poetry has been published in a number of magazines and she has previously had a novel published as well as an earlier poetry collection.

Doreen uses a variety of forms in this collection, including sonnets, rhyming sequences, a Golden Shovel, and villanelles. There is a particularly attractive set of seven sonnets based on the Christmas story, ‘The Pointing Star’.

Some recent successes by Oversteps poets

Sue Davies was the winner of the Edward Thomas Fellowship Poets Competition

Tony Watts won 1st prize in the Bedford International Writing Competition (poetry section)
and was shortlisted in the Littoral Press Nature Poetry competition

Rebecca Bilkau was the poet whose work formed the cantata, ‘A Blessed Round, which was performed at Jesus College, Oxford on 1st February

Other news

For obvious reasons, so many readings and launches have had to be cancelled. However, just before C19 hit us all bang in the face, Mary Robinson and Alwyn Marriage were guest poets at the Words by the Water festival in Keswick.

Sadly, another casualty of the Lock-down is that the Oversteps Day at Ways with Words in July will not now be taking place. We had some great plans for this ever-popular day, but for now will just have to look forward to the festival either being postponed to later in the year, or to a bumper festival in July 2021.

Some of you may by now be running out of good books to read, so I will take the liberty of including news of my latest novel, ‘The Elder Race, which, by catastrophic timing was due to be launched at the beginning of April. The launch has been delayed, but I have a good supply of copies, so please do email me if you would like one.

I’m getting wonderfully positive feedback from those who have already bought copies, so it would be really good to get some more out into the world while we wait for that world to return to some sort of normality.

Oversteps News 57 September 2019

We are delighted to publish a third collection by Elisabeth Rowe. Her previous Oversteps books were Thin Ice and Taking Shape.

Timewise by Elisabeth Rowe (ISBN  978-1-906856-84-7), price £8 plus p &p.

Elisabeth’s poems are often humorous, invariably sensitive, and always intelligent. Some of the poems in this collection reflect on the passage of time and the facts of ageing and mortality. Having experienced, and fortunately overcome, the danger imposed by cancer, Elisabeth does not take life for granted. Dartmoor, where Elisabeth has the good fortune to live, figures strongly, but so, also, does British Columbia and the Haida Gwaii, and the colonial India of an earlier age.

Places by Paul Surman (ISBN 978-1-906856-79-3), price £8 plus p&p.

In his poetry, Paul is often ‘the observer unobserved’ as he introduces us to aspects of nature that we might well have otherwise missed. a-brief-poetry-of-time-full

richard-skinner
In a humorous side-reference to Stephen Hawking’s  ‘A brief history of time’, Richard Skinner offers us a collection of poetry around the theme of time. The first half of the book is wide-ranging in its subject matter, and then the second half is a sequence of fourteen elegant sonnets.

Another life
by Fokkina McDonnell (ISBN 978-1-906856-67-0), price £8 plus p&p

fokkina-mcdonnell

Oversteps News 42  July 2016

I suspect that not many publishers have the pleasure of publishing new collections at once by two poets who are married; but that is what Oversteps is doing this month. Both Susan Taylor and Simon Williams have been published by Oversteps before, and we’re pleased to present their latest collections.

Temporal Bones by Susan Taylor (ISBN 978-1-906856-64-9), price £8 plus p&p

Susan's front cover

Bone Song - Susan (crop)

Susan Taylor has a light touch and a deep well of inspiration and stories. As well as poems based on myth, fairy tale and history, this new collection contains the whole of her Inuit-based Skeleton Woman sequence. Formerly a farmer in Lincolnshire, Susan now lives and writes on Dartmoor and is married to Simon Williams.

Inti by Simon Williams (ISBN 978-1-906856-65-6), pice £8 plus p&p.

Inti front coverSimon Williams greenery behind extra bgInti was the Inca name for the Sun, which space scientists have now given to a particle of dust collected by the Stardust probe from the Wild 2 comet. Some of Simon’s poems reflect his interest in science, others are much more down-to-earth, and many of them display his irrepressible humour and quirkiness. He is married to Susan Taylor and lives on Dartmoor.
