Oversteps News 66, May 2022

This will be a bit of a bumper newsletter, with information about our two latest books, forthcoming readings and news about the future of Oversteps.

chris-considine-1Strange Days, by Chris Considine (ISBN 978-1-906856-93-9), price £8strange-days-full-1 plus p&p.

Strange Days, published last month, is Chris’s sixth collection, but her first with Oversteps.

After a teaching career in Bedford and several years spent in rural North Yorkshire, Chris Considine now lives in Plymouth, overlooking the Sound. Some of her poems recall the Yorkshire countryside she loves, others give tantalising glimpses of a Breton cottage she visits (A century old, this one – a stone-built house / with steep-pitched, small-tiled roof) while others shine a light on real people, past and present.

Cannonball with feathers by Caroline Carver (ISBN 978-1-906856-94-6) with black and white illustrations, price £8 plus p&p.

An earlier collection by Caroline, Three Hares, was published by Oversteps in 2009, and we’re delighted to welcome her back. Her work references some of the many different parts of the world in which she has lived and is enriched by the people she has known and loved over her long life. In this book you can read about Caroline’s scrapes with bears and steep mountainsides, as well as memories, occasionally painful, of childhood.

As it happens, Caroline’s book is our last publication, as Alwyn Marriage is now winding down the publishing programme. She will continue as Managing Editor for at least another year, while plans unfold for the future; but after over 14 years and about 100 books published, she has decided that the growth and success of Oversteps has become too much for one person to manage.

In other news, Alwyn has, by coincidence, got two new books coming out this week.

Possibly a Pomegranate: Celebrating Womankind (ISBN 978-1-911587-61-3).
Palewell Press, £9.99.

Pomegranate front cover copy

Following her small 2017 publication, In the image: portraits of mediaeval women (IDP), this is a much larger book of poems about women all through the ages, from the pre-historic to the contemporary. Copies are available from Alwyn (alwynmarriage@marriages.me.uk) or the publisher.

Among Alwyn’s poems about women there’s one that was too long to be included in this new collection, Chiara; so the e-book publisher, CUT, has kindly brought this out as an e-book, even though they have never published poetry before. Only 99p!

Two major Oversteps readings in the next few months

We are so pleased that, after a couple of difficult years during which Ways with Words managed to continue working, including having the courage to present a smaller festival last year, this year Ways with Words is back in its full glory. It will take place at Dartington between 8th and 19th July. I’d like to bring two of the events of the festival to your notice.

Oversteps Day will be in the Upper Gatehouse on Saturday 16th July, and as this will be something of a swan song for me, I hope quite a number of you will be able to join us to celebrate all that Oversteps has achieved in the last 14 years. Do come along to enjoy readings by Ron Scowcroft, Chris Considine, Caroline Carver, Jennie Osborne, Simon Williams, Susan Taylor, Susan Jordan, Denise McSheehy, Ian Royce Chamberlain, Joan McGavin and Alwyn Marriage.

The day before, Friday 15th July, I am delighted to be able to launch my own new collection, Possibly a Pomegranate, at 3.15pm, also in the Upper Gatehouse. All welcome. https://wayswithwords.co.uk/

This summer sees a new festival, the Totnes & Bridgetown festival, and once again there will be an Oversteps reading, this time by some of our poets who are based in Devon. This will be on Monday 22nd August, when Ian Royce Chamberlain, Chris Considine, Dana Littlepage-Smith, James Turner and I will be reading at East Gate bookshop in Totnes at 6.00pm.

I shall also take part in a presentation on fiction, ‘Stranger than fiction, truer than fact’, at the same venue on Friday 19th August, when I shall be talking about my last novel, The Elder Race.  6.00pm in East Gate bookshop.

Music and poetry can enhance each other, so I have been thrilled recently to be invited to read my poetry at two wonderful music concerts, first at Inspiring Women, a truly inspiring event to celebrate International Women’s Day at Guildford Cathedral; and then at Songs & Sonnets, with a fantastic programme of music by the Vasari Singers.

If you have read this far, congratulations, you are probably one of the people who have encouraged and nurtured Oversteps Books over the past 14 years. Thank you for your support. Special thanks, too, to Andrew Nightingale who has been so generous in giving invaluable advice and help with the website; to ImprintDigital, who have been reliable and helpful printers throughout; and to my husband, Hugh, for all his encouragement and support. I shall still send out occasional newsletters to let you know what Oversteps poets are up to; but will not be publishing any new books.

Thank you for reading these newsletters, coming to our readings and buying our books over the last 14 years. The books will still be for sale for the foreseeable future, so please do carry on ordering them.

Long live poetry
